I love that my office is in Koeberg Nature Preserve. Very quiet. Walking trails everywhere. You never know if you're going to run into Zebra, Springbok, or many other species. Just be careful where you step. Many Cape Cobra's and Puff Adder's here. Not nice. In Winter they're hibernating so not a problem. Come summer they are out. I saw these clouds mid morning and I really liked the shapes and the color gradient as you looked farther East toward the mountains.
My Awesome ECCO Everyday Boots - 175/365
It seems that here in Cape Town I always default to my Danner, or my ECCO boots. My ECCOs are pretty much my everyday shoes. I've had these in some similar model or the same for the last twenty years. Waterproof, comfortable, and tough! Is this an ad?
Whales in my Backyard
I woke up this morning to an ocean, that for Cape Town, almost looked like a lake. Though there were small waves, it was very calm. I knew that if I just looked carefully enough during these conditions, it would not be difficult to spot the Whales. I opened the blinds and I did not have to search. They were about 50-100 yards off the beach. Right in front of my place. The last time I saw them they were much farther off. I made some photos of what I saw this morning and you can see those below. What I tried to emphasize was perspective. I wanted to show their size and how close they were to shore. These are the Southern Right Whales. They come close to shore between June and November to calve and feed their newborns. As such you do not see them breach (jumping out of the water). It paid off being patient though. The last few images were of the tail. Enjoy!
Cape Town Winter Selfie - 174/365
The weather in Cape Town during Winter is much like Miami. It changes abruptly and can be extreme from one day to the next. Yesterday was a bright sunny day with no wind and beautiful waves. Today, very different and very cold. No run for me without cold protection as you see here!
My Backyard Waves - 173/365
A really beautiful Cape Town, Winter day with nice waves literally in my backyard! The town I live in, Melkbosstrand (Milk Bush Beach) is a surf town with restaurants on the beach where kids ride their bikes, skateboard, and surf in perfect safety. Not what many people think of Cape Town.
Surfboard Casualty - 172/365
I ran across this poor guy at one of the surf spots near my place called Hagaat. It's about four miles from my place on the way to Cape Town and has quite a hectic break. Evidently, he and his board ran into a large powerful wave. I never really saw this in Florida unless someone actually hit something like a rock or a reef. Here it's just the power of the waves. I've seen about four of these casualties recently. Wouldn't it be great to harness that power?
Nothing Better - 171/365
Nothing better than getting things from home. Especially photos. And printed too! Imagine that. Thanks Mom for going "old school" with the photos. I love them! My365Project: Nothing Better - 171/365
Springbok Night Encounter - 170/365
A herd of Springbok at Night that I encountered as soon as I opened the door leaving work one evening. A quick snap with the Iphone was all I could manage before they took off. They were probably more surprised than I was. Since it was an Iphone image you can see how close they were to me. My365Project: Springbok Night Encounter - 170/365.
My Official AfrikaBurn Passport - 169/365
I got my AfrikaBurn Passport on check-in. Pretty cool idea! My Official AfrikaBurn Passport - 169/365. My365Project
Really, You Can Buy This? - 168/365
This was the first time I've ever seen this in a store. I'm sure it has no effect. Just found it odd. What do you do with it?
Selfie after a Surf - 167/365
I don't ever remember wearing beanies in Miami. Only on the odd trip up North or an infrequent ski trip. In those cases I even had to borrow them. I certainly was not the type to wear one in ninety degree weather as is common to see now. That's just ridiculous. Anyway, the beanie is necessary here and I've collected a few already. This is a self-portrait after a surf session in the backyard.
Going Old School in Muizenberg - 166/365
The beauty and look of the Old School Longboard is Classic and ageless. While this board may not actually be a longboard (greater than 9'1") the shape and look fit the profile. So does the gray haired guy carrying the board. Surfers here in Cape Town have surfed all their lives. Many were taught by their Fathers or Mothers and have passed it on to their kids and Grandkids. While there are many places with better and bigger waves than Muizenberg in South Africa, it is definitely the center of the universe for the sport in Cape Town. Everyone learns in Muizenberg.
The Pope of Afrikaburn 2014 - 165/365
About a month after Afrikaburn 2014, there was a get together called Decompression. Another reason for a party. A lot of Burners were there. Saw some people I met in the Tankwa Karoo. This guy was just too good to pass up. The ireverance was just so colorful and appealing. Thanks Pope!
A Not So Pretty View of Table Mountain - 164/365
All or most of the images of Table Mountain, including my own, are the Post Card type pretty touristy views. I am going to start capturing images of the Table Mountain that we see everyday in Cape Town from different perspectives and places. Some not so pretty, but always majestic.
Melkbos Beach at Night 163/365
A Night Scene of the town Melkbosstrand (Melkbos Beach) where I live.
Stomp Surf Wax - 162/365
I found the sticker design that came with this bar of surf wax interesting. I never thought that at this point in my life I'd be buying surfboard wax.
View of Table Mountain from Work - 161/365
I am fortunate enough to have my office in the middle of a Nature Preserve. Since there are virtually no buildings around, I have an unobstructed view of Table Mountain. View of Table Mountain from Work - 161/365
BMW Scooter - 160/365
This was a first for me. A BMW Scooter! I think I'd ride it.
Cape Town Fisherman - 159/365
I saw this Fisherman on one of my many walks on the beach. Had to be in Black & White.
Going Out for a Surf -158/365
Two ladies going out for a surf on Stand-Up-Paddle-boards. Muizenberg beach. Here in Cape Town they're not used solely in calm water like in Miami. People actually surf big waves with them.
