Skateboarder on Muizenberg Beach - 137/365

I made a couple of images of this Skateboarder while he was sitting. I liked the scene from  behind him as he was looking out toward Muizenberg Beach, False Bay, and the Cape of Good Hope in the background. Yes, nothing but water between here and Antarctica. But I preferred this image as it is more dynamic. I like the way he is turning away, almost as if he is turning away from surfing to go Skateboard, while the girl in the bottom is entering the frame. Or maybe he has to go use the restroom LOL! Muizenberg is the beach and the town, however, False Bay is the body of water that it fronts. There is a small granite island in the bay called Seal Island, which is one of the main breeding sites for the Cape Fur Seal. The seals attract many Great White Sharks and some of the biggest sharks ever seen have been spotted in these waters. These sharks are famous for the manner in which they breach the surface of the water while attacking seals, sometimes jumping entirely out of the ocean. Despite this, swimming, surfing, yachting, scuba diving and so on are popular pastimes around the bay, at centres such as Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Smitswinkel Bay, Strand and Gordon's Bay. Shark attacks are generally uncommon but by no means unknown, with two deaths since 2010. Skateboarder on Muizenberg Beach - 137/365

Full Double Rainbow in my Backyard - 136/365

Yes, this is real. I made this image as a panorama so that I could fit in the rainbow end to end. I did enhance the blue of the sky so that the second more faint rainbow was visible. Never seen anything like this. I do have witnesses! Full Double Rainbow in my Backyard - 136/365

This is the typical image of Muizenberg. Everything that it is famous for in one shot.The Mountains, the Beach, the Surfer, the Colorful Cabanas, the Water, and the Shark Flag. Oh and as an extra added bonus, notice the surfboard painted in the colors of the South African Flag. I could not have staged a better representation of Muizenberg. I love the place! It really grows on you.

Saying Goodbye to 2014 Afrikaburn - 124/365

Leaving 2014 Afrikaburn I was able to await a lull in the people leaving to be able to make an image of the entrance and the gong that Afrikaburn Virgins are to hit on entrance to the festival. It looked a lot different during the day against the morning sky. It was an experience that I was not well prepared for with regard to food, ice, etc. If I am to attend next year I will be better prepared. It is definitely an event that someone in South Africa should attend at least once.

Many of the images I made at Afrikaburn could have been made at Burning Man in the U.S. Most of the images were not uniquely South African. Except for this one. The girl with the South African flag draped around her. I thought it fitting to highlight this one. I really like it. It's contemplative. My 365 Project 123/365.

It's so common to walk out at about anytime on the beach here in Cape Town and see people and their dogs. This is a very dog friendly culture. It saddens me that I cannot have my dog over here. This is a Venture into the Abstract

I listen to a lot of photography podcasts, read a lot of photography books, and also see the work of many photographers. I was listening to a photographer on a podcast about discovering and working with more abstract images as a way of self-expression. Abstract usually translates into, you either love it or hate it. There's usually no in-between. The image above started out as an abstract image that was a mistake. Literally my shutter went off as my camera was moving after making an image. I saw the result and decided to put some work into it in several image programs. The result is what you see. Like I said, you probably love it or hate it. Enjoy either way.

It's so common to see people of all ages on the beach in front of my house. I was lucky enough to be out making sunset images when this little boy came speeding by on his bike. What a wonderful sense of care-free freedom, and what a beautiful place to ride. My 365 Project 110/365.

Table Mountain Sunset from Blouberg Beach - My 365 Project 108/365

I know I've said it before, "I never get tired of Sunsets in Cape Town or Table Mountain." I was driving home and I decided to stop at Blouberg Beach when I saw this beautiful sunset. The amazing thing about making sunset images it that they change in seconds. In this case the sun was setting behind my right shoulder and the colors you see are a reflection of the sunset on the scene. Some people complain, or ridicule trinkets that people bring them from trips and vacations, and many times rightfully so. It actually takes thought to give someone a meaningful gift. Meaningful does not have to mean expensive, just relevant. I made this image because it is an image of a thoughtful gift. This was given to me by my sister on her recent trip to Hawaii. Knowing Hawaii, I'm sure it was expensive as well. She knows that I enjoy my one or two Sam Adams beers every evening. Now in Cape Town, that would be Jack Black Lager. I can now slip my beer into my Koozie and think of her and home. Thanks Sis!

The Mountain from the Boerewors Gordyn

Table Mountain is virtually everywhere you look in Cape Town. This is a view of the mountain at dusk from one of the Northern Suburbs along Plattekloof Road, in what is known as the Boerewors Gordyn (Eng Phonetic: Boorevors Hoardane) (Translation: The Boer Curtain) beyond which the main language spoken is Afrikaans. This dates back to when the English controlled Cape Town. The English ruled the Cape and people in and around the city and the Southern Suburbs spoke mainly English, where the Afrikaaners that were not fond of English rule stayed in the Northern Suburbs and mainly spoke Afrikaans. To this day I almost need a translator there. Not really, but you can instantly tell that the primary language is Afrikaans. Plattekloof offers a beautiful view of the city as it is at this point where you start gaining elevation away from Cape Town toward the East. My 365 Project 103/365.

My First Attempt at a Serious Panorama

"Melkbosstrand Sunset Panorama" 50/365. You really have to have this image fill the screen to appreciate it. This is my first serious foray into a Panorama. The sky was kind of ho-hum with my 35mm f1.4 lens on the Fuji XE-2 but all of the parts left and right put together with what I saw would be what I wanted. I made individual images and stitched them together in Photoshop. Then I turned them into the exact tone I wanted in Black and White. Actually a slight Gold and Selenium tone. I really like it. I really enjoy requiring myself to make an image everyday as it is pushing me to be creative. At least in my mind.
